Michele Carlson served on the editorial and leadership team of Hyphen, the oldest national print and online media outlet and community organization targeting the intersections of diverse and broad Asian American experiences, news, culture and politics. She was the Arts Section Editor and Editor in Chief. In 2016, she transitioned from Editor in Chief to an advisory capacity.

From 2016-2019, Michele Carlson was the Executive Director of Art Practical, an arts media organiztion based in the SF Bay Area focusing on the broader West Coast. AP produced weekly arts coverage, yearly online thematic issues, and extensive public programming. In 2016, AP launched two new channels Art Practical Audio, which hosted arts and culture podcasts (un)making (Weston Teruya), what are you looking at? (Elena Gross and Jay Katelansky), and PRNT SCRN (Dorothy Santos).  In October 2017, Art Practical Books published its first book Decolonizing Culture: Essays on the Intersection of Art and Politics by Anuradha Vikram.
