Beyond the Gift of Time and Space, 2025

Beyond the Gift of Time and Space models a framework of exchange we crafted in 2022 while hosting Thick Solidarity, an artwork in the form of a convening for thirteen artists of color within an artist-in residence program. As the lead artists for this gathering, we fell into a pseudo-administrative capacity that involved facilitating connections between the artists we had invited and the organization. This involved contending with our conflicting positions as artists, collaborators, humans, and (limited) agents of the institution. We occupied these roles imperfectly but wiht a gravity rooted in knowing we were tasked with offering support, care, and safety while also needing those things ourselves.

This collection of ephemera is a set of prompts that confront the many challenges and systemic biases inherent to artist residencies, specific, but not limited to the experiences of artists of color. Part tool kit, part testimony, this collection is meant to be deployed and we hope it helps you set terms for the institution, build reciprocity within a new community, and nourish your own artistic person within these complex spaces.

Includes On Hospitality For Artists of Color (Related Tactics), postcards versions of banners installed onsite for Thick Solidarity, recipes from Chef Patrick Ip, and Please Take My Spoon (joey enríquez).
